Naturopath, who treats traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda), advised me to stop eating onions and garlic due to my IBD.

Fresh garlic and onions can irritate the inflamed intestinal walls of IBD patients. However, garlic and onions add flavor to food and are an excellent source of sulfur, which is essential for producing glutathione (the main antioxidant at the cellular level). There is no reason to avoid garlic and onions in cooking in reasonable quantities.

Garlic, onions, hot peppers, and very spicy foods in their natural form can damage the intestinal walls of people with leaky intestines and among patients with an imbalance in the intestinal flora. At the same time, in cooking, the active ingredients (allicin) are destroyed. It is important to emphasize that garlic and onions contain sulfur, essential for glutathione production, the powerful antioxidant found in almost every cell in our body. Therefore, the recommendation is to appropriately consume garlic, onions, and spicy foods, usually in cooking and in their natural form in measured amounts.
