Chronic constipation is often a side effect indicative of insufficient bile flow into the duodenum. The phenomenon is more common in IBD patients.

Gallbladder blockages are typical in menopausal women, so estrogen levels drop—hormonal fluctuations in women, especially women who have had births and prolonged use of birth control pills. Bile is especially essential for shielding the intestines; in its absence, the intestines become acidic and inflammatory. Chronic constipation is very typical of all chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. (Although occasionally there may also be chronic diarrhea)
