Unlike most autoimmune diseases in which the body attacks its cells and autoantibodies (ANA) can be detected, the case of IgA nephropathy is different; inflammation is caused by the accumulation of antibodies in the kidneys that cause inflammation and gradually decreased kidney function. The body correctly detects a pathogenic infection in mucous tissues, probably in the gastrointestinal or respiratory tract. Still, antibodies are falsely sent to the kidneys due to an (unknown) malfunction!
