Unlike most autoimmune diseases in which the body attacks its cells and autoantibodies (ANA) can be detected, the case of IgA nephropathy is different. Inflammation is caused by the accumulation of antibodies in the kidneys, which causes inflammation and gradually decreased kidney function. The body correctly detects a pathogenic infection in mucous tissues, probably in the gastrointestinal or respiratory tract. Still, antibodies are falsely sent to the kidneys due to an (unknown) malfunction!
