Liver function is critical for cancer patients, as the liver controls most of the body's metabolism. Without normal liver function, it is challenging to recover from cancer. The liver requires more energy at rest than any other organ in the human body, even more than the brain—almost three times the heart! The liver and kidneys consume about a third of the body's energy at rest.
Energy expenditure breakdown (From Wikipedia)
Liver 27%
Brain 19%
Skeletal muscle 18%
Kidneys 10%
Heart 7%
Other organs 19%
