The liver of cancer patients often carries a substantial metabolic burden. Still, no single test indicates an estimate of liver function percentage compared to expectations for age and sex.

Few metrics are often used to measure urgency for liver transplantation. Since there are no clear indices of liver function, it is necessary to perform many blood tests such as ALT, AST, ALP, ALBUMIN, BILIRUBIN, GGT, PT, and LD, as well as imaging tests and examination of the various symptoms. The chances of misdiagnosis are higher because the tests do not give an unequivocal result. MRI is considered a reliable test but does not give a proper liver function percentage figure.
