Countries must allocate resources for pure scientific research in medicine and nutrition as part of health budgets, on the understanding that pure scientific research serves public health in the long run. The food and drug industry invests billions in research but nothing in research whose results could cause economic damage! Therefore, an objective entity must conduct scientific research that has implications for public health.
