The recommendation is correct. It is advisable to go with a hat and sunglasses. It is advisable not to apply tanning oil (which contains chemicals absorbed into the skin). The exposure is not intended to give the skin a tanned appearance but only to produce high amounts of vitamin D3, which is critical for the immune system. Nutritional supplements are not well absorbed. The sun (in controlled and moderate exposure) has several times more substantial effects.
